Pentagon Leaks: What did we find out?

A large section of the highly classified Pentagon documents of the US national security branch was leaked over the last week, which exposes state secrets, suggesting that the US has been spying on their enemies and allies alike. Nearly a hundred documents were leaked, many of them relating to one of the most sensitive topics of the world today, 'The Russian Invasion of Ukraine'.

What do these files say?

US intelligence officials were pessimistic in February about Ukraine’s prospects for a new attack in the spring, saying Kyiv could fall well short of recapturing territory seized by Russia. The leaks suggest that the US had been monitoring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s calls with defense and military officials by using signals intelligence. They also reveal apparent weaknesses in the Ukrainian air defense systems and the size of military battalions.

The documents would also reveal that the US had penetrated the Russian military forces and the Wagner Group, a mercenary organization, much more than previously understood. This leak could also place the human sources who provided the information about the Russian troops to the US at risk.

These records also indicate that the US has been spying on its allies such as Israel and South Korea. Some documents also shared information about Egypt's involvement in the

Russio-Ukrainian War. According to the document, Egypt had plans to produce 40,000 rockets for Russia in secret. However, an unnamed official quoted on Egyptian news channels described the allegation as "utterly baseless" and said Cairo did not take sides in the war.

Who leaked these files?

The FBI has arrested a 21 year old air national guardsman, Jack Teixeira in Massachusetts, suspected to be the one responsible for the leak. The US attorney general said that Teixeira was being held in connection with an investigation into alleged unauthorized removal, retention and transmission of classified national defence information.

Teixeira is believed to have been the leader of an online chat group where hundreds of photographs of secret and top-secret documents were first uploaded, from late last year to March. The online group called itself Thug Shaker Central, made up of 20 to 30 young men and teenagers brought together by an enthusiasm for guns, military gear and video games.

This leak also brings up an important question, how was a 21 year old air national guardsman able to leak such highly classified documents, and can such a leak happen again. Is the US national security branch secure enough?
