A Legacy of Tragedy: Unanswered Questions
R.G. Kar Medical College, one of Kolkata’s most esteemed medical institutions, is unfortunately becoming more synonymous with tragedy than with triumph. Over the past two decades, a series of suspicious deaths have unfolded within its walls—each more chilling than the last. As the no. of such incidents is on the rise, so do the questions. Is this merely a series of tragic coincidences, or is there something more sinister lurking beneath the surface?
Timeline of Tragedy:
• 2001: Soumitra Biswas, a fourth-year medical student, was found hanging in his hostel room under suspicious circumstances. Initial ruling: suicide. Subsequent whispers: a deadly cover-up involving a porn ring.
• 2016: Dr. Gautam Pal, a professor, was found decomposed in his locked apartment, bruised and bloodied. Official cause: cardiac arrest. Speculation: foul play.
• August 2023: Suvorojyiti Das, an intern, dies from a drug overdose. Official ruling: suicide. Details: scant, questions about the pressures of medical training.
• August 2024: A young trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered on duty. Initial response: attempted cover-up as suicide. The public outcry: deafening.
2001: The Mysterious Death of Soumitra Biswas
It all began in 2001 with the death of Soumitra Biswas. This bright, fourth-year medical student was found hanging in his hostel room. The case was swiftly labeled a suicide, but whispers among students and faculty suggested something far darker—a porn ring operating within the hostel, which Soumitra may have uncovered. The presence of tripods and reflectors in a neighboring room, the suspicious position of his body, and the discovery of a handkerchief stuffed in his throat all pointed to foul play. Yet, the case was closed with little more than a shrug. Was Soumitra silenced for what he knew? And if so, why was this hushed up so quickly?
2016: The Enigmatic Demise of Dr. Gautam Pal
In 2016, Dr. Gautam Pal, a respected professor, was found dead in his apartment, which was locked from the inside. Bloodstains and bruises hinted at a violent struggle, yet the official cause of death was listed as a heart attack, with suicide as a secondary possibility. But how does a man sustain such injuries alone in a locked room? And why was this case, with all its suspicious details, so quickly closed? Was it negligence, or something more sinister?
2024: A Crime Beyond Comprehension
Then came the most horrifying incident yet. On August 9, 2024, a young trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered within the college. She was on duty, serving the public during a punishing 36-hour shift when at least ten men—her colleagues—subjected her to unspeakable violence. The autopsy revealed a shattered pelvic girdle, bleeding from multiple areas, and bruising that covered her body. The cause of death was “throttling” and “smothering”—a brutal end for a woman who had dedicated her life to saving others.
Initially, the college dismissed the case as a 'suicide'. However, as the autopsy details caught the traction of the media, 'suicide' as a reason seemed to be unlikely but rather gangrape and murder.
The principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, too initially stood by the suicide claim, only to resign later amidst public outrage. But his resignation was short-lived—just 24 hours later, he was reinstated as the Principal of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. The media and Calcutta HC later heavily criticized this move by the WB government.
A Pattern or Mere Coincidence?
The patterns are hard to ignore as we look back at these cases. Over the years, R.G. Kar Medical College has seen more than its share of tragedies that raise far more questions than they answer. Is it simply a coincidence that so many young lives have ended here under mysterious circumstances? Or is there something deeper, something darker at work?
Why do these deaths continue to happen? Why is justice so elusive in these cases? Are these tragedies linked by more than just their location? And most importantly, who is protecting the people responsible for these horrors?
These are the questions that hang heavy over R.G. Kar Medical College. The answers, if they exist, are buried deep within a system that seems more intent on preserving itself than on finding the truth. As more lives are lost, we must ask—how many more must suffer before the full extent of this darkness is brought to light?
